Director’s Brief: New York, “Newsies,” and the new season

by Karen Azenberg

So sorry I missed last week—with going to New York, and all the craziness of the holidays, Friday came and went before I realized it.

What is the latest at PTC you ask? Well, casting is ongoing for both In the Heights and Twelfth Night. New York was busy. We probably saw 150 actors for the two shows. Plus, another 80 or so here in Salt Lake City. So it will not be easy making the decisions.

Secret Santas abound among the Newsies cast, who are embracing the holiday spirit nightly. They’re also enjoying the love from the audiences every night.

Our student matinees have been particularly appreciative of this production. One more week to go! I’ll spend much of my “down time” over the holidays reading plays and reviewing options for next season. Speaking of which, have you participated in our season survey yet? It’s available on line here. I want to make sure we hear from everyone. The process of season selection kicks into high gear in January. Hard to believe we aren’t halfway through this season and I’m on to the next.

Finally, a shout out to PTC alum and SUU alum Keala Settle, who co-stars with Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman, next week at a movie theatre near you! You go girl! We love you!
