Director’s Brief: Lin, the Bard, and Next Season…

by Karen Azenberg

This week, you get random observations from the desk of the Artistic Director…

Just in case you were worried, despite the weather on the East Coast, everyone made it to PTC for the first day of rehearsal for In the Heights and Twelfth Night.

I find it striking that in one rehearsal room we have the work of the Bard, and in the other Lin-Manuel Miranda’s. Oskar Eustis, the Artistic Director of the Public Theater in New York, has said, “Lin does exactly what Shakespeare does… He takes the language of the people, and heightens it by making it verse.” Also, they both like injecting popular culture into their work—an intriguing coincidence.

If you’re planning on coming to In the Heights—and I hope you are—you can get in on an opportunity drawing we’re having for a pair of Hamilton tickets! For two Hamiltons ($10 x 2), you get you one chance! (Details to come…)

Also, are you anxiously awaiting our season announcement? It will appear any minute now! But if you can’t wait, here’s a preview. See if you can guess… We’ll open the season with a very recent Tony Award-winning play and one of my favorite Stephen Sondheim musicals…

Have a great week!
