Director’s Brief: Not one, but two plays…

by Karen Azenberg

Happy Friday!

Another busy week….

Playwright Alex Lewin, Director Matt August and the cast of The Envelope have been hard at work in one rehearsal room preparing for tonight’s reading as part of our Play-by-Play series. Right next door, Jeff Talbott and I, along with the cast of i, are deep into our second week of rehearsal preparing i for its world premiere on our main stage in just two weeks.

I love this! It is so exciting having not one, but two new plays happening at the same time. The energy in the building is palpable! There are many furrowed brows as actors concentrate on learning their lines or figuring out how last night’s rewrite affects their character, as stage managers run back and forth to the printers adding new pages, updating paperwork, and as the arrival of the design team is imminent yet another level of energy and complexity is added to the process.

Meanwhile, as SLC prepares for Hamilton madness, don’t forget we are producing a concert of In the Heights in March—get your Lin-Manuel Miranda fix in both March and April.

Hope to see you at Play-by-Play this weekend!
