PIONEER THEATRE COMPANY TO PRODUCE LES MISÉRABLES AS PART OF ITS 2012-2013 SEASON
Season Includes Three Musicals, Two Pulitzer Prize Nominees
Salt Lake City, UT – The epic musical Les Misérables returns to Pioneer Theatre Company, after its record-breaking sold-out 2007 regional premiere at PTC, as the final event of PTC Artistic Director Karen Azenberg’s inaugural season. The 2012-2013 season will open with the Utah premiere of In the Heights, one of three musicals offered, and will also include the Utah premiere of the winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Clybourne Park.
The theatre’s seven-play season opens with the Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-nominated musical In the Heights, running September 14 to September 29, 2012, and is followed by John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men from October 19 to November 3, 2012. A Christmas Carol: The Musical, with music by eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken and originally produced at Madison Square Garden, fills the holiday slot from November 30, 2012 to December 15, 2012. The stylish romantic comedy The Philadelphia Story runs from January 11 to January 26, 2013, followed by the Utah premiere of Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris, from February 15 to March 2, 2013. The iconic Neil Simon comedy, The Odd Couple, runs from March 22 to April 6, 2013, and Les Misérables will run from May 3 through June 1, 2013, which includes two extra weeks of performances.
Remarking on the season, Artistic Director Karen Azenberg said, “For my first season I wanted to include all the different types of theatre I love: musicals both old and new, two very different but wonderful comedies, a fascinating and topical new play and a moving classic. There’s something for everyone in this season.”
Season tickets range from $84 to $307, which means that season ticket patrons pay between $12 and $44 a ticket to see shows that cost over $100 on Broadway or National Tours. Notes PTC Managing Director Chris Lino, “The last time we did Les Misérables, the only way to get good seats was to either buy season tickets or pay four times face value to scalpers. For the price of one or two tickets to a Broadway show theatergoers can have a full season of entertainment at PTC, and be assured of the best seats and the convenience of exchanging their tickets if they can’t make their regular performance. And, as our long-time patrons know, you’ll be seeing the same actors who appear on Broadway stages, and the same spectacular sets and costumes that you would see on Broadway.”

In the Heights
Music and Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Book by Quiara Alegria, Conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda
September 14 through September 29, 2012
Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical and Best Score and the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
“Light and sweet are just the words to describe this amiable show, which boasts an infectious, bouncy Latin-pop score by a gifted young composer… and a stage full of energized, energetic performers you can’t take your eyes off.”—The New York Times
In Washington Heights, New York, three generations of Latino immigrants dream of succeeding in America while at the same time holding onto their culture and heritage. An uplifting and joyous celebration of life, In the Heights shows us a world that is at once exotic and different from our own but filled with the same dreams shared by us all.
Of Mice and Men
By John Steinbeck
October 19 through November 3, 2012
The timeless American classic.
Lennie and George, two Depression-era farm hands traveling from ranch to ranch looking for work, dreaming of owning their own place and “living off the fat of the land,” first stepped onto the stage over seventy-five years ago. They have since entered into the American consciousness as mythic characters. Steinbeck’s moving and tragic story, taught to generations of American high school students, is a powerful fable about the human impulse to make, and hold onto, spiritual connections with our fellow men as we travel through life. Contains some strong language.
A Christmas Carol: The Musical
Music by Alan Menken, Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, Book by Mike Ockrent & Lynn Ahrens
November 30 through December 15, 2012
The spectacular new MUSICAL version of a holiday classic.
“Music, dance, colorful costumes and atmospheric scenery—all intended to make holiday theatergoing a pleasant family experience—are marshaled here to satisfying effect.” —The New York Times
By the eight-time Oscar-winning composer of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, this singing-and-dancing musical version of Dickens’ Christmas classic provides a wonderfully fresh look at the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghostly visits he receives one Christmas Eve.
Originally produced at Madison Square Garden in New York City, this new musical of a beloved Christmas tale is sure to provide a festive evening of entertainment for the whole family.
The Philadelphia Story
By Philip Barry
January 11 through January 26, 2013
The sparkling romantic comedy that has charmed generations of theatergoers.
Tracy Lord is young, beautiful, sophisticated, fabulously wealthy, and about to marry what she thinks is the man of her dreams. But when her dashing ex-husband and the two reporters assigned to cover her wedding descend on her family’s opulent country house outside Philadelphia the day before the ceremony, Tracy has a hard time keeping her nuptials—not to mention the dictates of her own heart—on track.
Clybourne Park
By Bruce Norris
February 15 through March 2, 2013
Winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
“Dangerous and provocative, but pulverizingly funny to boot.”—Variety
Currently the most electrifying new play on Broadway, Clybourne Park is a fascinating, insightful, and often brutally funny look at the way we talk about—or avoid talking about—race in America. When a white couple wants to buy a home in the gentrifying, all-black neighborhood of Clybourne Park, Chicago, they unknowingly re-enact the same tense drama, fraught with miscommunications and barely suppressed hostility that occurred fifty years earlier in the same house. Contains strong language.
The Odd Couple
By Neil Simon
March 22 through April 6, 2013
The laughs never stop in this iconic comedy by America’s best-loved playwright.
After their thoroughly fed-up wives throw them out, sloppy sportswriter Oscar Madison and uptight neat freak Felix Ungar decide to move in together, thinking they’ll save on expenses and have a few laughs.
It turns out the laughs are on them.
Les Misérables
A musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, Lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer
May 3 through May 18, 2013
Extra weeks: May 20 through June 1, 2013
Winner of 5 Tony Awards including Best Musical.
In 2007, PTC’s production of Les Misérables played for ten sold-out weeks. Now the epic musical masterpiece is back! Victor Hugo’s story of Jean Valjean, an escaped prisoner who redeems his life through selfless acts of love even as he is pursued by the implacable Inspector Javert through some of the most tumultuous years in French history, has thrilled millions of theatergoers all over the world.
