A Few Good Men

Salt Lake City – Pioneer Theatre Company presents the military drama A Few Good MenJanuary 24 through February 8, 2014.
A courtroom drama about two young Marines charged with the murder of a third at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, A Few Good Men premiered on Broadway in November 1989. It was subsequently made into a hit movie in 1990 directed by Rob Reiner and starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson.
JOE TAPPER plays the role of the callow young military lawyer Lt. J.G. Daniel Kaffee. Tapper has worked at such theatres as Huntington Theatre, Yale Repertory, The Shakespeare Theatre, Mabou Mines, Studio 42, The Hangar Theatre and Northern Stage, and appeared in The Edinburgh International Fringe Festival in The Jammer, winner of the Fringe First Award. His television credits include Law & Order: SVU and Taxi Brooklyn, and he holds an MFA from the Yale School of Drama. He returns to PTC after playing George in last season’s Of Mice and Men.
KATE MIDDLETON plays the role of Lt. Cmdr. Joanna Galloway, who presses Kaffee into digging further into the seemingly open-and-shut case. Middleton’s off-Broadway and New York credits include Pratfalls (The Abingdon, world premiere), The Late Christopher Bean (TACT),Avow (NYIT Best Lead Actress), The Other Place (MTC workshop), Separate Tables (TACT Salon Series) and The Unearthing (New TACTics), Bell Book and Candle, Proof, Barefoot in the Park, The Shape of Things, House of Yes, Pump Boys & Dinettes (Ground UP Productions). She has appeared at regional theatres across the country and on television’s Law & Order. This is her PTC debut.
TORSTEN HILLHOUSE plays the role of Nathan Jessep, the hardened Marine Corps Colonel who commands the military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Hillhouse has appeared off-Broadway in The Polish Play and The Odyssey. His other New York credits include Tender with Thirteenth Night, As You Like It and The Recruiting Officer with NY Classical Theatre, and WTC View at 59E59 Theatre. He has performed at regional theatres across the country, and has been seen on television on Law & Order and As the World Turns. This is his PTC debut.
SPENCER MOSES plays the role of Sam Weinberg, the third member of the legal defense team. Moses’ Broadway credits include the original casts of Guys and Dolls (2009 revival) andAaron Sorkin’s The Farnsworth Invention (co-produced by Steven Spielberg). He has appeared at regional theatres across the country, including the Goodspeed Opera House, Dorset Theatre Festival, Theatre Under The Stars, La Jolla Playhouse and The Old Globe. On television, Moses can be seen playing the ukulele and singing on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. This is his PTC debut.
MAX ROBINSON plays the role of Colonel Markinson, Jessep’s right-hand man. Robinson has appeared at PTC in over 100 productions, including as Thénardier in Les Misérables, as Colonel Pickering in My Fair Lady, and as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest. In addition to various film and TV credits, Robinson played Oscar Wilde in Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde at The Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C., which earned him a Helen Hayes Award nomination. He has been seen at local theatres, at regional theatres across the country, and in the last four seasons at the Utah Shakespeare Festival.
CHRISTOPHER KELLY plays the role of Lt. Jack Ross, the prosecuting attorney on the murder case. Kelly’s off-Broadway credits include Moby Dick (Drama Desk Nomination) and revival ofAnother Part of the Forest. Kelly has been seen in the world premieres of Grace, or the Art of Climbing, Great Wall Story, The Center of Gravity, and Pierre, and in regional theatres such as the Denver Center Theatre and the Shakespeare Theatre, Washington, D.C. His television credits include Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and Damages. He returns to PTC after appearing inThe Foreigner, The Yellow Leaf, and Dracula.
Playing the roles of the Marines on trial for murder are COREY ALLEN as Harold Dawson and local AUSTIN ARCHER as Louden Downey. Allen’s recent New York credits include Moony’s Kid Don’t Cry (Drama League DirectorFest) and Created Equal (Red Fern Theatre). Regionally, he has appeared in A Raisin in the Sun, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Huntington Theatre Company), The Fall of Heaven (The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis), Othello, Twelfth Night,Henry V, King Lear, The Comedy of Errors, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Great River Shakespeare Festival), and The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Cyrano de Bergerac (Utah Shakespeare Festival).
Salt Lake city native Archer has been seen as The Cat in Dr. Suess’s The Cat in the Hat and as Nephi Jensen in Saturday’s Voyeur at Salt Lake Acting Company, Mark Cohen in Rent with Utah Repertory Theatre, Slim in Cowboy Mouth with Good Company Theatre, and Dr. Madden inNext to Normal at the Ziegfeld Theatre. He studied Musical Theatre at Weber State University. This is his PTC debut.
Other Equity cast members include JASON CRUZ as Pfc. William T. Santiago, DAVID MANISas Capt. Randolph, and S.A. ROGERS as Cmdr. Stone. Rounding out the cast are local actorsSPENCER BELNAP, JIM BENNETT, ALEXANDER ELTZROTH, JESS KELLNER, AMOS OMER, MARCELLA PEREDA, STEW SINGLETON and JUSTIN TSATSA.
PTC Artistic Director KAREN AZENBERG directs this production, after directing and choreographing A Christmas Carol: The Musical, directing The Odd Couple and choreographingLes Misérables last year. Originally from New York, her work there includes Lyrics and Lyricists(92nd St. Y), Blocks (a collaboration with Jonathan Larson), Prom Queens Unchained, and choreography for Richard Greenberg’s The Dazzle (Roundabout). Other credits include National Tours of Carousel and Brigadoon, Neil Simon’s Laughter on the 23rd Floor (Regional Theatre Premiere at Geva), West Side Story (over 15 productions; Dramalogue Award for Outstanding Choreography), and others.
Scenic design is by guest artist JAMES NOONE. Noone’s New York City credits include Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, Lincoln Center Theatre, Roundabout Theatre Company and numerous others. Broadway productions include Jekyll and Hyde, Class Act, The Persians, Judgment at Nuremberg, Night Must Fall, The Sunshine Boys, The Gin Game, A Bronx Tale and Come Back Little Sheba. His work in opera has been seen at Glimmerglass, NYC Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera, and others. For television he designed Sweeney Todd, Candide, Passion, Camelot, Stephen Sondheim’s 80th Birthday Concert for PBS, and Company, seen in select movie theaters.
CAROL WELLS-DAY designs costumes for this production. Wells-Day is one of PTC’s resident costume designers and the costume shop supervisor. Her recent designs for PTC include A Christmas Carol: The Musical, Next to Normal, Sunset Boulevard, Dracula, Is He Dead?, Dial ‘M’ for Murder and The Light in the Piazza, among dozens of others. She was assistant designer forInherit the Wind at the Ford Theatre in Washington D.C., and worked for the Utah Shakespeare Festival for 13 years as a costume shop supervisor and designer.
Lighting design is by PAUL MILLER. Hair and makeup design is by PTC resident designerAMANDA FRENCH. Sound design is by JOSHUA C. HIGHT.

Pioneer Theatre Company operates under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) and Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States. Pioneer Theatre Company, Utah’s only fully professional theatre, performs at Roy W. and Elizabeth E. Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre, located on the University of Utah campus at 300 South and 1400 East in Salt Lake City, easily accessible by TRAX light rail.
