So begins one of the most exuberant and spirited battles of the sexes ever written, starring Beatrice and Benedick, two people who claim to thoroughly detest one another. But under the barbs they hurl at one another lie feelings that neither is even aware of—until circumstances bring them together to rescue their young friends.

Creative Team

MATT AUGUST (Director) directed last season’s production of In the Heights. His productions have been seen both on Broadway (How the Grinch Stole Christmas) and Off-Broadway, on National Tours, in many Regional Theatres and Festivals, and have been nominated for Helen Hayes, Bay Area Critics, and Australia’s Helpmann Awards. His shows have appeared on Year-End Top Ten Lists for the L.A. Times (Two Gentlemen of Verona-Old Globe), San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland Tribune, San Jose Mercury News (Baby Taj-TheatreWorks), NPR/KQED(Fourth Messenger). He recently directed the L.A. Times “Critic’s Choice” production ofJDT:Discord and will be directing Richard III for L.A.’s Independent Shakespeare Company this summer. He’s received fellowships and residencies from the Drama League, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center, the Juilliard School, San Francisco’s Zen Center and received the Panavision New Filmmaker’s Grant. He’s mentored several directors through the Drama League and SDC Foundation, guest taught/lectured around the country and served on many Drama League Directing Fellowship selection committees. He directed the short family film How to Get to Candybar, which has played film festivals around the world, winning “Best Comedy” twice. He holds an MFA from California Institute of the Arts.

KAREN AZENBERG (Choreographer) This marks Karen’s second season as Artistic Director here at PTC. Earlier this season she directed Something’s Afoot and A Few Good Men. In previous seasons as a guest artist, she directed Next to Normal (regional premiere), Rent andMiss Saigon, and she created the musical staging for the record-breaking 2007 production ofLes Misérables. Originally from New York, her work there includes Lyrics and Lyricists (92nd St. Y), Blocks (a collaboration with Jonathan Larson), Prom Queens Unchained, and choreography for Richard Greenberg’s The Dazzle (Roundabout). Other credits include national tours ofCarousel and Brigadoon, Neil Simon’s Laughter on the 23rd Floor (Regional Theatre Premiere at Geva), West Side Story (over 15 productions; Drama-Logue Award for Outstanding Choreography), A Christmas Memory (Alabama Shakespeare Festival), and Same Time Next Year (Indiana Repertory Theatre). Karen is on the board of the New York Musical Theatre Festival and is a past president of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

JAMES NOONE (Scenic Designer) has worked for some of NYC’s most prestigious theatre companies including Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, Lincoln Center Theatre, Roundabout Theatre Company and numerous others. Off-Broadway he designed the original productions of Terrance McNally’s Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Three Tall Women, the long-running solo shows Full Gallop and Fully Committed, Cowgirls and Breaking LegsA Bronx TaleBoys in the Band and the musicalRuthless. Broadway productions include Jekyll and HydeClass ActThe Persians, Judgment at Nuremberg, Night Must Fall, The Sunshine Boys, The Gin Game, A Bronx Tale and Come Back Little Sheba. He has designed national tours and at leading regional theatres across the country. His work in opera has been seen at Glimmerglass, NYC Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera, and others. For television he designed Sweeney ToddCandide,PassionCamelot, Stephen Sondheim’s 80th Birthday Concert for PBS, and Company, seen in select movie theaters. Awards include the Drama Desk, American Theatre Wing Design Award, two Helen Hayes Awards (DC), the LA Ovation Award, and two NAACP Theatre Design Awards.

ELIZABETH CAITLIN WARD (Costume Designer) Caitlin’s interest in convergent forms of media in opera, theater, and film has given her the opportunity to work all over the world and to design for many different types of performance, from the ancient to the emerging. Recent work includes opera, aerial, and animation projects for Polo Arts Beijing and the Chinese Ministry of Culture at the Souzhou Opera; Milan-based animation studio, Bonsai Ninja, Daniele Zambelli’s multi-platform aerial ballet with Simmetrico Italia, and battleROYAL, Berlin; Spoleto Festival, Lincoln Center Festival, SITI Company, and live, convergent media concerts Helikopter-Streichquartett and BASETRACK. Her work has been seen at the Royal Shakespeare Company-UK, Carnegie Hall, English National Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Sundance Film Festival, London Film Festival, Intiman Theater, New York City Opera, European Capitol of Culture, 2009, Lithuanian National Opera, Seattle Opera, Signature Theater, Guthrie Theater, Flying Machine, and, in association with designer Eiko Ishioka, Zhang Yimou’s One World, One Dream Opening Ceremonies-Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Her film design credits include highly acclaimed classical ‘music video,’ Ghosts & Flowers: Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia for Rome Arca Productions, 2011; Myriad Pictures Dark Matter (Winner Alfred Sloan Prize-Sundance Film Festival, 2007); Bert and Arnie’s Guide to Friendship (Winner London Film Festival-Best Feature Film, 2012); Gracie, 2007, Post Factory NY Tommy’s Pumpkin; and PBS-Great Performances Bill Irwin-Clown Prince: Mr. Fox. Awards include the New York City Opera General Director’s Council Award for Artistic Excellence and the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Costume Design. Caitlin lives in Brooklyn with husband, Roderick Hill, and cat, Willie.

JOSHUA C. HIGHT (Sound Designer) A Graduate With Distinction of London’s Alchemea College of Audio Engineering, Joshua comes to us with many years of experience in professional audio systems repair and design, and has established himself as an exceptional live sound engineer in both London and Salt Lake City. Joshua is looking forward to a successful first season working in theater design with PTC. His other projects of note include working with Sommerset House for the 2012 Olympic Games, Of Monsters and Men, Collective Soul, Fallout Boy, Slash, the Psychedelic Furs, Citizen Cope, the Dropkick Murphys, Gogol Bordello, Kate Nash, Easton Corbin, Sevendust and many more.

AMANDA FRENCH (Hair and Makeup Designer) has been a Makeup and Hair Designer for over 20 years. She has worked for Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, the Utah Opera, Egyptian Theatre Company and the University of Texas as Austin. She is a contributing writer in the tenth edition of Stage Makeup by Corson, Glavan and Norcross, and her work can be seen in The Costume Technician’s Handbook by Ingham and Covey, andWig Making and Styling: A Complete Guide for Theatre and Film by Ruskai and Lowery. She attended the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati where she studied with Hair and Makeup Designer Lenna Kaleva. She is a member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) and a current University of Utah adjunct professor of wigs and makeup.

SYNOPSIS: Jerry Herman’s energetic Hello, Dolly! is a musical filled with charisma and heart. Matchmaker Dolly Levi is a widow, a matchmaker, and also a professional meddler –but everything changes when she decides that the next match she needs to make is to find someone for herself. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Hello Dolly! is boisterous and charming from start to finish. Dolly Levi is one of the strongest and richest starring roles for a woman ever written for musical theatre.

LANGUAGE:  A few mild uses of  “damn.”

SMOKING AND DRINKING:  The characters sing of smoking although none is depicted, and wine and champagne are consumed during dinners.
