Book and Lyricist’s Note
Frank [Wildhorn] and I have had the pleasure of seeing productions of our The Count of Monte Cristo all over Europe and Asia, but I am truly excited to experience it here in Utah, at the Pioneer Theatre Company, where I’ll finally be able to hear the lyrics and dialog that I wrote in the original English.
Karen Azenberg, the Artistic Director of the Pioneer and a friend of many years, approached Frank and me with the idea of doing a professional production here and I’m lucky and very thankful that she did. Karen brought to the table not only the fantastic facilities and support staff of the Pioneer Theatre but the unbelievably talented Director, Marcia Milgrom Dodge, someone with a bold vision and the energy and gift to bring that vision to life on the stage. Ms. Dodge’s excitement is infectious and energized both Frank and myself into a reimagining of the piece, which I now can’t wait to experience on the stage of this fabulous theater. I hope you, the audience, will enjoy this musical as much as Frank and I did in the creation of this brand new production.
