We are deeply saddened by the passing of Harold Prince, a game-changer, uniting voice, and the heart and soul of Broadway. To the world his name and legacy was larger than life, but to me he was Hal- a friend who delighted in conversation on craft, family, life, and integrity; a mentor (one of hundreds if not thousands he took under his wing) who, as an inspiration, challenged me to always question things, push boundaries, and not settle for less than absolutely needed to make “good” work “great” work; a steady voice of reason, and an even steadier hand, in an often unreasonable world.
Following his 91st birthday he wrote me “Thanks so much for celebrating my 19th! I couldn’t be happier or busier or younger!” And that really sums it up for Hal and his insatiable love for everything he did and every soul he touched. I miss him tremendously.
Today the world both celebrates and mourns this man, legend, and gift to humanity.
